The Pavilion Awards over $156,000 in Scholarships to Fine Arts Students

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is proud to announce the awarding of over $156,000 in scholarship funds to local high seniors pursuing the fine arts in higher education.

Part of The Pavilion’s mission is to provide support to young artists as they pursue college degrees in the arts and this opportunity is awarded to students through The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program. Each year, scholarships are awarded to high school seniors based on talent and academic performance within the following five disciplines: dance, instrumental music, musical theatre, theatre art, visual art and vocal music. Since beginning this program, over $1.3 million in fine arts scholarships has been awarded.

“We are pleased to continue our long-standing tradition of awarding annual scholarships to talented young students in and around our community,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. “It’s an honor for us to provide assistance to these outstanding artists as part of our mission and I commend them all on their accomplishments.”

This year, The Pavilion Partners were able to award 22 new scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $7,500. The scholarship recipients represent 12 high schools across seven school districts. Renewal scholarships were also awarded to 29 recent recipients of a Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship who are majoring in the Fine Arts and in a field of study consistent with the discipline in which they initially auditioned.

The following are the 2020 scholarship recipients:

  • Ruben Acuña Gonzalez, Tomball High School (Instrumental Music) – University of Texas at Austin
  • Leah Austin, The Woodlands High School (Theatre Arts) – University of Texas
  • Faith Belford, Nimitz High School (Visual Art) – Dillard University
  • Mackenzie Berryman, Spring High School (Visual Art) – Lone Star North Harris
  • Sam Blizzard, Magnolia High School (Instrumental Music) – Belmont University
  • Evieh-Bijan Braddy, Nimitz High School (Visual Art)
  • Armani Brown, George Washington Carver High School (Musical Theatre) – Sam Houston State University

“The scholarship committee is dedicated to supporting students studying the fine arts and awarding scholarships is one of the highlights of our year,” said Stephanie Teed and Deborah Butler, Scholarship Committee co-chairs. “It is amazing for us to watch scholarship alumni thriving as artists and fine arts educators and we are thankful for the opportunity to give back to our community in this way.”

To many students, these scholarships are vital to accomplishing a degree in a fine arts discipline. Scholarship funds are raised by Partners and The Pavilion throughout the year and specifically through the annual Wine Dinner and Auction.
