By  |

Putting their best foot forward for homebound elderly in need of food and companionship, Meals on Wheels Montgomery County (MOWMC) held its first “Miles for Meals” 5K Run/Walk on February 11, 2017, and it was a runaway success. In fact, so successful that the event surpassed the anticipated fundraising goal and participation was sold out just weeks before.

Sponsored by The Woodlands Dermatology Associates, the family-friendly event at the B52 Brewing Company in Conroe welcomed runners, walkers, strollers and dogs who enjoyed the winding neighborhood route.

“We are extremely grateful the community stepped up to support Meals on Wheels in such a big way,” said Bonnie Pfrenger, Director of Development for Meals on Wheels Montgomery County. “Interest was so high that registration had to close three weeks before the race. We are excited to announce this event raised $38,000.”

Six hundred people attended the event. Everyone who ran or walked or strolled were winners as each received a souvenir B-52 mug and three pints of craft beer, root beer or lemonade. Everyone stayed after the race enjoying the beautiful weather and sampling the fare from the Sauerkraut, Goat’s Mobile Catering and Wings on Wheels Food Trucks.

Miss San Antonio, Miss Lone Star State, Mrs. Spring and Mrs. Montgomery cheered runners as they crossed the finish line. Mark Amann was the fastest runner overall. The first place finishers were:

  • 12 & under: Lane Hymann and Sienna Caveney
  • 13-18 age group: Dallas Freed and Silvano Bello
  • 19-35 age group: Mark Amann and Nicole Bozick
  • 36-50 age group: Kevin Baker and Shannon Beck
  • 51 and over: Bob Schamus and Linda Groner
  • Argo and his owner, Jesse Medina, were the top dogs in the canine category.  Jesse Medina, a disabled Army Veteran, is an inspiration to many. He just completed the Houston Police Academy Training and is now a Houston Police Officer.
