Memorial Hermann Health System Expands Minimally Invasive Cardiovascular Care

By  |

THE WOODLANDS, TX – Memorial Hermann Health System is expanding its minimally invasive cardiovascular care services by bringing the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure to West Houston and The Woodlands. Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center began offering the procedure this month, while Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center will begin offering the procedure in June.

“Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute is committed to offering comprehensive cardiovascular care in the greater Houston community. From state-of-the-art imaging to advanced procedures and cardiac rehab to help patients embrace healthier lifestyles, we aim to help people improve their heart function and return to active lifestyles as soon as possible,” says Josh Urban, Sr. Vice President and CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure to treat aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve, the main heart valve supplying blood to the body. The procedure is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for those who are at intermediate or high-risk for open heart surgery.

“Because it is a catheter-based procedure often done through an artery in the leg, TAVR offers similar risks, or even lower risks in some patients, compared to traditional open heart surgery,” says Scott Bassett, MD, an interventional cardiologist with Memorial Hermann Medical Group Cardiology The Woodlands. “Additionally, less invasive procedures such as TAVR offer faster recovery times, both in the hospital as well as after discharge. There is often less blood loss, less pain, less need for wound healing, which all equates to a quicker return to normal life.”

Physicians affiliated with Memorial Hermann have extensive experience with TAVR. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center began offering the procedure in 2011. After the service expansion is complete, Memorial Hermann will offer the TAVR procedure at four facilities: Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center.

Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute has a team of world-renowned affiliated cardiovascular surgeons offering minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide variety of heart conditions. To learn more about Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, visit memorialhermann.org/locations/the-woodlands.org.
