Groundwater Town Hall for Woodlands Residents
THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Woodlands residents concerned about emerging groundwater issues in Montgomery County are welcome to attend a Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District (LSGCD) town hall meeting on the evening of Monday, April 22 at the South County Community Center.
The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA) General Manager James M. Stinson, P.E., said, “The county experienced tremendous growth over the last 40 years. Until recently, the only source for local drinking water was groundwater. Aquifer levels in The Woodlands have declined from 200 to 400 feet in recent decades. Recent land subsidence in The Woodlands from groundwater withdrawal has been well documented. Land subsidence is known to cause numerous environmental concerns, including increased storm water flooding.”
The Texas Water Code, Chapter 36, requires groundwater districts like the LSGCD to ”provide for the conservation, preservation, protection, recharging, and prevention of waste of groundwater, and of groundwater reservoirs or their subdivisions, and to control subsidence caused by withdrawal of water from those groundwater reservoirs or their subdivisions.”
In November 2018, the LSGCD board was converted by special legislation from a nine-member appointed board to a seven-member elected board. The Woodlands Township is represented by one of the seven members. The town hall meeting is intended to raise awareness of how the newly elected board members will carry out their duties.
