Future MD Anderson Location in The Woodlands Tops Out

By  |

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center celebrated a milestone in the construction of its three-story clinic in The Woodlands, a facility due to open to patients in spring 2019. The “topping out” signals the placement of the final structural beam in the 208,000-square-foot building located at the corner of State Highway 242 and Fellowship Dr. When completed next year, the outpatient clinic will house treatment and supportive services currently available at MD Anderson in The Woodlands, plus new diagnostic and screening services.

Relocating to the new building about three miles from current locations on the campus of CHI St. Luke’s The Woodlands will be radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology and infusion therapy. Other supportive services that will move include laboratory, pharmacy, rehabilitation, pain management, nutrition counseling, social work and genetic counseling.

New diagnostic services, including bronchoscopy, endoscopy and interventional radiology, will expand MD Anderson’s complement of services. A post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) with up to 17 beds will serve the diagnostic area. There also will be a women’s imaging center with mammography, ultrasound and other technologies for screening and diagnosis. Additionally, a retail center will be available for ordering breast prosthetics and other supplies. Gathering rooms will be available for the Breast Friends support group meetings and other community education events.

“When this building opens next year, MD Anderson’s expanded footprint in The Woodlands will provide a new level of services to further enhance cancer care and the patient experience for those in this community and the surrounding counties,” said Peter WT Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson. “The Woodlands is special as it was the first community outside the Houston metro area where MD Anderson located a clinical facility. This project reinforces our commitment to providing excellent care to those who call this area home.”

The new center will take advantage of The Woodlands’ natural settings with plenty of windows and light. Patients who receive chemotherapy will have private bays with windows that look out to the plush environment.

Once all the services are fully operational, the MD Anderson workforce at the new facility is expected to double from its current number. Currently, there are about 100 faculty and staff caring for patients in its The Woodlands locations.

MD Anderson has been a part of The Woodlands community since 2004, when it opened a radiation treatment center. The radiation oncology clinic has remained in the same location on the CHI St. Luke’s The Woodlands campus but as services were added, MD Anderson moved into a second building. Currently, MD Anderson occupies about 45,000 square feet in both buildings.

In addition to its location in The Woodlands, MD Anderson has clinical care centers in Sugar Land, Bay Area, Katy and the Texas Medical Center. Together with diagnostic imaging centers in Bellaire and West Houston, a surgical office in Memorial City and a gynecologic oncology clinic at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, MD Anderson provides a network of convenient locations to access MD Anderson’s top-quality cancer care close to home.
